After a large crack appeared in Kenya , There are fears that Africa could literally split into two.
At several miles long already the crack continues to grow, causing experts to speculate that the African continent is splitting into two. Fortunately though, they believe that it would take at least several million years before the worst happens.
That doesn’t mean significant damage hasn’t been done though as the crack has caused part of the Nairobi-Narok highway to collapse.
Dr. Lucia Perez Diaz who is Postdoctoral Researcher at the Fault Dynamics Research Group, London’s Royal Holloway (writing for The Conversation) wrote “The East African Rift Valley stretches over 3,000km from the Gulf of Aden in the north towards Zimbabwe in the south, splitting the African plate into two unequal parts: the Somali and Nubian plates,”
she added that “”Activity along the eastern branch of the rift valley, running along Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, became evident when the large crack suddenly appeared in south-western Kenya.”
